Two Hurricanes, One Town

Few places on the Texas coast have taken two major hurricanes as directly as this one. Celia made landfall near Aransas Pass on the afternoon of August 3, 1970, with an estimated gust of 180 mph. Harvey followed in 2017, and the National Weather Service says Aransas Pass had the most reports of major damage in its county. Tree Removal in Aransas Pass, as a result, is often about trees that carry storm damage you can't see from the ground.

Harvey by the numbers

A Texas Tech StickNet unit just southeast of town measured a 108 mph gust at about 8 feet off the ground during Harvey, which the NWS adjusts to roughly 135 mph at standard height. Numerous large power poles fell across the eastern half of San Patricio County, and some areas went more than a week without power. Trees that came through winds like that may have cracked limbs, shifted root plates or bark torn away on the windward side. If yours is one of them, a close look now beats finding out in the next storm.

A town spread across three counties

Aransas Pass is mostly in San Patricio County, with portions in Aransas and Nueces counties. It sits on the mainland facing Redfish Bay, and a 6-mile causeway and the free ferry tie it to Port Aransas. The city covers about 52 square miles, but three-quarters of that is water. On land, you'll find tight older lots near the harbor, larger parcels at the edge of town and plenty of homes built after Harvey.

Common removals here

Freeze-killed palms. Palms around Conn Brown Harbor and in yards across town took a beating in February 2021. Dead fronds and headless trunks are a wind hazard.

Oaks with storm splits. A seam where two leaders meet, open to rain since 2017, can be rotting from the inside.

Brush and volunteer trees. Mesquite, huisache and hackberry grow fast on vacant lots and along back fences.

Trees too close to rebuilt homes. A tree that was fine near the old house may now crowd a new roof or slab.

How we keep the job clean

We chip limbs as we go, cut trunks into manageable sections and rake the work area when we're done. The quote spells out whether wood stays or goes and whether stump grinding is included. We don't start until you have the price in writing.

Aransas Pass Questions

How do I know if my tree was weakened by Harvey?

Look for cracks at forks, bark missing on one side, dead branches in the upper crown or a lean that wasn't there before 2017. Dense sprouting along the trunk is another sign the tree lost much of its crown. We'll check up close during the estimate.

Do you work on the Nueces County side of town too?

Yes. We cover all of Aransas Pass, whichever county line your lot falls on.

Can I just cut the dead palm fronds myself?

On a short palm, maybe. On anything taller than a ladder can safely reach, no. Dead palm tops can drop heavy material without warning, and climbing a dead trunk is risky. Call us for anything you can't reach from the ground.

Is it worth removing a tree before hurricane season?

If it's dead, cracked or leaning toward the house, yes. Spring is the best time to take care of it.

Can you clear a lot I'm about to build on?

Yes. We remove the trees and brush in the building footprint, grind stumps and leave any trees you want to keep with their root zones marked off. It helps to have the site plan on hand at the estimate so we know where the slab, drive and septic will go.

What happens if a tree falls on my house during a storm?

Get everyone out of the affected rooms, call your insurer and, if lines are down, your electric provider. Then call us. We'll remove the tree from the roof in pieces so the structure isn't damaged further, and we can tarp-ready the area by clearing the debris.
