When a Palm Has to Go

Palm tree removal is a different job from taking down an oak. A palm has no limbs to lower, but it has a heavy crown, a trunk that can be eighty feet tall, and, on a Canary Island date palm, sharp spines at the base of every frond. In Corpus Christi the most common reason we remove a palm is that it is dying, and the most common cause is lethal bronzing.

Lethal bronzing in Nueces County

Lethal bronzing is caused by a phytoplasma, a bacterium-like organism carried from palm to palm by the American palm cixiid, a small leafhopper-type insect. According to the Texas Department of Agriculture, many palms around Corpus Christi began to decline in 2001, the cause was identified in 2002, and the disease is now found in Nueces, Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy counties and parts of Kleberg County. Canary Island date palms and other Phoenix palms are affected most often, and queen palms and cabbage palmettos can be infected too. AgriLife Extension calls it the only known phytoplasma disease of palms in Texas and a reportable, regulated condition.

The usual sequence is a mature palm suddenly dropping most of its fruit, then the oldest fronds turning reddish brown from the tips, then the central spear leaf dying. Roots decay until the trunk can sometimes be rocked. The palm generally dies within about a year. TDA's advice is to remove and destroy palms that test positive, so they stop serving as a source for neighboring trees, and to report confirmed cases. There is no cure for an infected palm.

Other reasons palms come out

Not every brown palm has lethal bronzing. Hard freezes damage queen palms and some others; Mexican fan palms tolerate about 18 degrees before they suffer. Very tall Mexican fan palms, which can reach about 80 feet, often outgrow their spot and lean over roofs or into service lines. Their dead fronds stay attached as a thick skirt that shelters rats, wasps and scorpions. Sometimes the right answer is removal; sometimes it is a thorough trim. We tell you which.

The Work Involved

Palm removal covers the whole tree, from the crown down to what is left at ground level.

Dead and diseased palms

Palms killed by lethal bronzing, freeze or rot cut down and hauled away rather than chipped and left on site.

Tall fan palm removal

Mexican fan palms taken down in sections from the top when there is no room to drop the trunk.

Date palm removal

Canary Island and other date palms, with the spiny frond bases cut back first so the crew can work the trunk.

Palm stump removal

The root ball and trunk base ground out or dug so the spot can be replanted with something other than a palm.

Clusters and volunteers

Seedling palms and clumping palms crowding a fence or foundation cleared out.

From Quote to Cleanup

1. Identify the palm and the problem

We note the species, check the spear leaf, fruit and trunk, and tell you whether disease, freeze or age is the likely cause.

2. Plan the drop or the sections

Open yards allow a palm to be felled; near a roof, pool cage or wires, the crown and trunk come down in pieces.

3. Itemized quote

Each palm, the method, the stump and the haul-away, priced line by line.

4. Remove and haul

Fronds, seed stalks and trunk sections are loaded out, and tools used on a diseased palm are cleaned before the next tree.

5. Stump and cleanup

The stump is ground if you chose it, and the yard is raked and cleared.

Why Choose Us for Palm Tree Removal

We look before we cut

A brown palm may be freeze-burned and recover. We tell you what we see rather than selling a removal.

Diseased wood leaves the property

Palms with lethal bronzing symptoms are hauled out, not left in a pile next to healthy palms.

Tool hygiene

TDA recommends disinfecting pruning tools with one part bleach to four parts water; we clean blades between palms.

Palm Tree Removal Questions

How do I know if my palm has lethal bronzing?

Watch for sudden fruit drop, old fronds browning from the tips, and above all a dead central spear leaf. Those signs point strongly to it, but a lab test confirms it. Your Nueces County AgriLife Extension office can explain testing.

Can a palm with lethal bronzing be saved?

No. There is no cure for an infected palm, and it usually dies within a year. Treatments discussed by extension services are preventive, for healthy palms nearby, and applying them for hire requires a Texas Department of Agriculture pesticide license.

Should I replant a palm in the same spot?

If the old palm died of lethal bronzing, many homeowners choose a species that is not a host, such as a native tree or shrub, rather than another date palm. Ask the extension office about current host lists before replanting.

How much does it cost to remove a palm tree in Corpus Christi?

National guides put most palm removals between about $150 and $1,500 depending on height, with HomeGuide listing $200 to $900 for a 30 to 60 foot palm. Spiny date palms and tall fan palms over a roof cost more. We give a written price after seeing the palm.

Is a dead palm dangerous?

Yes, over time. Dead fronds and seed stalks fall without warning, and as the trunk and crown rot, the whole head can drop. A dead palm next to a driveway, patio or roof should not wait for hurricane season.
