On the Island, It's Mostly Palms
Tree Removal on North Padre Island means palms more than anything else. The northern end of the island, up to the Kleberg County line, is part of Corpus Christi, and its canal neighborhoods and condos were landscaped with Washingtonias, queens, date palms and sabals because few shade trees thrive in salt spray and sand. When those palms die, they don't drop leaves and wait. They lose their heads, and a trunk 30 feet tall with no crown is a hazard next to a pool deck or a boat lift.
Why so many Island palms need to come out
Two things have hit them hard. The February 2021 freeze killed or badly damaged palms all along the coast, and some that pushed out a few new fronds that spring have declined ever since. Then there's lethal bronzing, a disease the Texas Department of Agriculture lists in Nueces County. Date palms are the most commonly affected species in Texas, queens and cabbage palms are also hosts, and an infected palm usually dies within a year. The state recommends removing and destroying palms that test positive.
Working around canals, docks and pools
Island lots are compact and usually backed by water. That changes how we take a palm down:
- We lower the head and trunk in pieces when there's a pool, screen enclosure or dock below.
- We keep fronds and trunk sections out of the canal. Debris in the water is a nuisance for everyone downstream.
- We set gear on the driveway or street side whenever possible to avoid marking pavers and turf.
- We grind stumps low enough for new sod, pavers or a replacement palm.
A barrier island's exposure
This is the first ground a Gulf storm meets. Packery Channel, which separates North Padre from Mustang Island, was scoured down to shale bedrock about 40 feet deep by Hurricane Harvey's surge in 2017. Wind, salt and surge all stress trees here. If you're replacing what comes out, salt-tolerant choices such as live oak, Texas ebony, wild olive and yaupon handle Island conditions far better than most nursery shade trees.

North Padre Island Notes
- City limits on the island. The northernmost part of North Padre Island, up to the Kleberg County line, is inside the city of Corpus Christi, with residential neighborhoods linked by canals that lead to the Gulf.
- Harvey and Packery Channel. Hurricane Harvey's 2017 storm surge eroded Packery Channel, the pass between North Padre and Mustang islands, down to shale bedrock about 40 feet deep.
- Palm disease in Nueces County. The Texas Department of Agriculture lists lethal bronzing as present and quarantined in Nueces County; Canary Island date palms are the most often affected, and infected palms typically die within a year.
- Main roads. The island's two main thoroughfares are Texas Highway 361 and Park Road 22, which runs south toward Padre Island National Seashore.

North Padre Island Questions
Can you remove a palm without anything landing in the canal?
That's the plan on every canal-side job. We cut the head and trunk in controlled pieces and lower them onto the yard or driveway rather than letting them fall toward the water.
I'm not on the Island right now. Can I still get a quote?
Yes. Send the address and photos of the trees, and we can meet a neighbor or property manager on site, then email you the written estimate.
What should I plant after a palm comes out?
Something that handles salt and wind. Live oak, Texas ebony, wild olive and yaupon are rated salt tolerant in Coastal Bend plant guides, and sabal palms are a sturdy option if you want to keep the palm look.
How tall a palm can you take down on a small lot?
Height matters less than what's underneath. A tall Washingtonia over a pool cage is handled by a climber and cut in short sections, each lowered on a line. Before we quote, we look at where the pieces can safely land and how they'll be carried out to the street.
Should I remove a dead palm before hurricane season?
Yes, if it's near the house, a neighbor's roof or a vehicle. A dead crown or a headless trunk can snap in tropical-storm winds and become flying debris. Spring and early summer are the right time to deal with it, before the Gulf gets active.
