Island Trees Have a Hard Life

Port Aransas trees live in sand, salt and wind, and Tree Removal in Port Aransas reflects that. Most yards here are planted with palms and a few tough shrubs, because few shade trees handle full exposure to the Gulf. When a palm dies or a storm snaps a crown, there's not much else around to block the wind, so a damaged trunk can become a projectile. We handle palm removal, salt-killed trees and storm-damaged yards across the island.

After Harvey

Hurricane Harvey hit Port Aransas hard in August 2017. A weather station at Port Aransas recorded a gust of 132 mph, and the National Weather Service counted more than 6,600 homes affected, including more than 4,000 with major damage and over 1,000 destroyed. Many properties were rebuilt and replanted afterward, so a lot of the trees and palms in town today are younger than the homes around them.

The freeze and the palms

The February 2021 freeze did the next round of damage. In January 2022, KRIS 6 reported a Port Aransas neighbor's palm losing its top in strong winds, and a local tree worker told the station that palms can look green while being dead from the freeze. That matches what we see: a few green fronds hanging on while the bud has rotted. If your palm hasn't grown a healthy new spear since 2021, it is probably finished.

Absentee owners and rentals

Census figures show 4,852 housing units in Port Aransas and more than 70 percent of them vacant at the time of the 2020 count, which mostly reflects second homes and short-term rentals. If you aren't on the island, we can meet your property manager or a neighbor for the walk-through and send you the written estimate. We'll schedule around guest bookings when we can.

Brush pickup on the island

The city collects brush and bulky waste on the second Monday of each month, with a limit of 6 cubic yards per set-out per home, and offers free brush pickup on Mondays and Tuesdays to residents with a paid residential sanitation account. Commercial properties, apartments and condo complexes have to take brush to the city's collection station. A whole palm or tree usually exceeds a single set-out, so we include hauling in the quote unless you tell us otherwise.

What we see most

  • Dead or headless palms near decks, pools and walkways
  • Freeze-damaged palms with a few green fronds and a dead bud
  • Trees burned on the windward side by salt spray
  • Storm-snapped tops and limbs
  • Stumps left after earlier storm cleanup

Port Aransas Questions

Will the city haul away a whole palm if I put it out for brush?

The brush and bulky collection has a limit of 6 cubic yards per set-out, and a full palm or tree often goes over that. Condo and commercial brush has to go to the collection station. Our quote says whether hauling is included.

Can you work while my rental has guests?

We'd rather not run saws while guests are in the yard. Tell us your booking calendar and we'll pick a turnover day or a gap between stays.

Is my palm dead or just damaged?

Check the newest spear at the very top. If it pulls out easily, smells rotten or hasn't grown in months, the bud is likely dead. A palm with a healthy spear and a few damaged fronds can usually be trimmed instead.

Do you take the ferry over for every job?

Island jobs mean the ferry or the drive up Highway 361 from Padre Island. We plan island work so a crew can do several stops in one trip, which keeps scheduling simpler.
