Three Shorelines, One Steady Wind

Tree Removal in Flour Bluff starts with geography. The Bluff sits on the Encinal peninsula with Corpus Christi Bay to the north, Oso Bay to the west and the Laguna Madre to the east, and the ground is flat at roughly 13 feet above sea level. Trees out here grow with nothing to block the wind, so they lean, they carry lopsided crowns, and when they fail they tend to fall the way the storm pushes them. We size up which way a tree wants to go before anyone starts a saw.

North Bluff and South Bluff

South Padre Island Drive cuts the area in two. North of it, much of the land belongs to Naval Air Station Corpus Christi. South of it are the neighborhoods, from older streets with big yards to newer subdivisions where builders planted palms and small oaks fifteen or twenty years ago. Those trees are now big enough to reach roofs and fences, and on tight lots there's often no clear landing zone. That's when we take a tree down in sections, lowering each piece on a rope instead of dropping the whole stem.

Wind history worth remembering

During Hurricane Harvey in 2017, the weather station at the naval air station recorded a 77-knot gust, about 89 mph, while the airport across town reported much lower numbers before it went offline. Back in 1970, Hurricane Celia left 800 to 900 family housing units at the base uninhabitable. Flour Bluff gets the bay's wind first. A live oak with a crack at a fork, or a palm with a pinched trunk, is far more likely to come apart here than the same tree in a sheltered inland yard.

Salt and sandy ground

Salt spray burns the windward side of many trees, and you'll see oaks that look full on one side and thin on the other. That alone isn't a reason to remove a tree. Salt-tolerant species such as live oak, Texas ebony, yaupon and wild olive handle coastal exposure well, and we'd rather prune a healthy one than cut it. Removal makes sense when the trunk is decayed, the roots have lifted, or the tree has grown into a structure it will eventually damage.

Typical Flour Bluff jobs

1. Palms killed or crippled by the 2021 freeze, still standing near patios and pools 2. Oaks with heavy limbs reaching over a roofline or the neighbor's fence 3. Volunteer mesquite and hackberry along back fences and alleys 4. Leaning trees whose root plate has heaved on the windward side 5. Stump grinding after removal, so the yard can be leveled and replanted

Brush and cleanup

Flour Bluff is inside Corpus Christi city limits, so the city's heavy brush schedule and pile limits apply here too. Our quote spells out what we haul and what, if anything, stays at the curb for your section's set-out dates. Call (361) 310-1470 to set up a visit.

Flour Bluff Conditions

  • Peninsula on three bays. Flour Bluff lies on the Encinal peninsula, bordered by Corpus Christi Bay on the north, Oso Bay on the west and the Laguna Madre on the east, on mostly flat ground about 13 feet above sea level.
  • Harvey gust at the base. The NWS lists a peak Harvey gust of 77 knots (about 89 mph) at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi in August 2017, higher than the 55-knot gust logged at the city airport before it went offline.
  • Celia's toll on the station. Hurricane Celia in August 1970 left 800 to 900 family housing units at NAS Corpus Christi uninhabitable, with about $35 million in losses.
  • Divided by SPID. South Padre Island Drive splits the area into North Bluff, mostly taken up by the naval air station, and South Bluff, where most of the residential streets are.

Flour Bluff Questions

My oak is bare on the side facing the bay. Does it need to come down?

Not necessarily. One-sided crowns from salt and wind are normal on the Bluff. We look at the trunk, the forks and the root flare; if those are sound, pruning is usually the better answer.

Can you take a tree down if there's no room to drop it?

Yes. On tight South Bluff lots we often remove trees piece by piece, lowering limbs and trunk sections on ropes so they don't hit the house, fence or pool.

Is Flour Bluff covered by Corpus Christi's brush pickup?

It's inside city limits, so the same heavy brush sections, pile limits and one-truckload rule apply. We'll tell you up front whether our price includes hauling all of the debris.

What happens to the palm fronds and trunk pieces?

Fronds go through the chipper or get bundled and hauled; palm trunks are fibrous and don't chip well, so they're cut into rounds and taken away unless you'd like them left. The written quote says which.
