Bigger Trees Than the Rest of Town

Calallen tree removal jobs tend to be larger than what we see closer to the bay. This corner of Corpus Christi, near where Interstate 37 meets U.S. 77, sits in the Nueces River valley, where sandy soils and river moisture let trees grow taller and wider than they do on the salt-burned flats. Lots are often bigger too, so the work may include a tall shade tree near the house plus a line of hackberry and mesquite along the back fence.

A former town with its own character

Calallen began as a railroad stop on Cal Allen's ranch in 1900 and got its post office in 1908. It was later annexed by Corpus Christi but kept its own name, its own school district and its own feel. Many homes sit on acreage or semi-rural lots where trees were never managed, which means we often find limbs grown over driveways, trunks rubbing outbuildings and dead wood hanging high in the crown.

Near the river

The Nueces runs past Hazel Bazemore Park, a 77.6-acre county park known for its fall hawk migration, and Calallen Dam holds back the Calallen Pool, part of the area's fresh water supply. Trees near the river and its low ground deal with periods of saturated soil. A tree that has sat in wet ground and then faces a strong wind can tip from the roots rather than break, which is the failure we worry about most around houses here.

On the higher ground

Away from the river, the terrain is flat to gently rolling, and the soil changes to the heavy clays that cover much of Nueces County. Mesquite and huisache move in fast on any untended corner. Left for a decade, a fence line can turn into a thicket of thorny trees that are hard to clear by hand.

How we handle a Calallen removal

  • Walk the whole lot. We mark each tree to come out, note what can be saved, and check for overhead lines, septic fields and well lines before we pick an approach.
  • Pick the method. Open acreage may allow a tree to be felled in one piece. Near a house or barn, we climb and lower it in sections.
  • Decide on the wood. Pecan, oak and mesquite all make good firewood or smoking wood. We can leave rounds stacked, or chip and haul everything.
  • Finish the ground. Stumps can be ground below grade, and we rake out chips or leave them as mulch if you'd like.

Calallen is inside city limits, so curbside brush follows the city's heavy brush schedule. Big clearing jobs usually need to be hauled. Call (361) 310-1470 and we'll walk the property with you. call (361) 310-1470

Calallen Background

  • River valley soils. Calallen sits in the Nueces River valley, where sandy river soils shaped the landscape, with flat to gently rolling terrain away from the river.
  • Hazel Bazemore Park. The 77.6-acre Hazel Bazemore Park on the Nueces River was donated to Nueces County in 1947 and is known for raptor watching, with more than 24 species recorded.
  • Railroad origins. The St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway built a stop on Cal Allen's ranch in 1900, the post office opened in 1908, and the area was later annexed by Corpus Christi while keeping its own school district.
  • Brushland on the clay. The USDA soil survey for Victoria clay, a series whose type location is in Nueces County, lists mesquite, huisache, spiny hackberry and lotebush as woody invaders of these blackland plains.

Calallen Questions

Can you clear a whole fence line of mesquite and huisache?

Yes. We cut the trees, chip the brush and grind or treat the stumps. Mesquite resprouts from the base if the stump is just cut flat, so we talk through stump options before we start.

Can I keep the wood from a pecan or oak removal?

Sure. Tell us what length you want and where to stack it. Leaving the wood usually takes some hauling off the job.

The ground around my tree stays soggy after rain. Is that a problem?

It can be. Saturated soil weakens root grip, and a tree that starts to lean after a wet spell may be pulling out of the ground. Look for cracked or raised soil on the side away from the lean and call us if you see it.

There's a power line running through the tree I want gone. Can you still do it?

Tree work near energized lines is a job for the utility's own line-clearance crews first. We'll tell you if that's the case on your lot, and once the line is cleared or de-energized, we can take the rest of the tree down and clean up.

How do you price a job with several trees on acreage?

We price it tree by tree on the written estimate, with brush hauling and stump grinding listed as separate lines. That way you can decide to do the house-side trees now and the fence line later.
