After the Wind Comes Through

Storm and emergency tree removal is the work nobody schedules. On the Coastal Bend it usually follows a tropical storm or hurricane, but a summer thunderstorm or a strong cold front can split a live oak or snap a palm just as easily. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and the city's record shows why it is taken seriously: Celia in 1970 brought 161 mph gusts to the Corpus Christi weather office, Harvey made landfall near Rockport in 2017 as a Category 4, and Hanna affected the city in 2020.

What to do first

If a tree has hit the house, get everyone out of the damaged rooms and away from any wire. Treat every downed line as live. AEP Texas takes outage and line reports at 1-866-223-8508, and limbs tangled in its lines are for the utility to clear. Take photos of the tree and the damage from several angles before anything is moved; your insurer will want them. Then call (361) 310-1470 and tell us what is down and what it is resting on.

Why storm trees are dangerous to cut

A tree that fell in a storm is not like a standing tree. Trunks and limbs are often bent under tension, and when they are cut they can spring or roll. A trunk resting on a roof may be holding up part of the roof structure. Root plates on uprooted trees can tip back into the hole once the trunk is cut free. Storm work is slower and more careful than a planned removal for that reason, and it is why emergency rates are higher in every cost guide.

How we sort the calls

After a big storm there are more trees down than crews to clear them. We take calls in order of danger: trees on occupied houses, trees blocking the only way out of a home, and limbs hanging over driveways and doors come first. Trees lying across a yard or a back fence can wait until the urgent work is done, and we will tell you honestly where you are in line.

What You Can Book

Emergency work covers getting the tree off what it hit, then cleaning up what is left.

Trees on roofs

Limbs and trunks lifted or cut off the house in a planned sequence so the roof is not damaged further.

Hanging and split limbs

Broken limbs still caught in the canopy, the ones arborists call hangers, brought down before they fall on someone.

Uprooted and snapped trees

Trees that went over in saturated ground or snapped at a weak point cut up and hauled away.

Fallen palms

Palms with snapped trunks or dropped crowns removed from yards, pools and driveways.

Debris cleanup

Branches, fronds and logs from one or several trees chipped or hauled off the property.

Storm & Emergency Tree Removal Questions

Does homeowners insurance pay to remove a fallen tree?

Often, when the tree damaged a covered structure such as the house or a fence, and usually up to a set limit. A tree that fell in the yard without hitting anything is often not covered. Read your policy or call your agent, and photograph everything before cleanup.

A tree fell on my power line. Can you remove it?

Not while the line is live. Call AEP Texas at 1-866-223-8508. Once the utility has made the line safe or cut the power, we can remove the tree and the rest of the debris.

How fast can you come after a hurricane?

It depends on how many trees are down across the city and what is blocking roads. We work trees on occupied homes first and give each caller an honest estimate of timing rather than a promise we cannot keep.

Can I leave a leaning storm-damaged tree until later?

A tree that started leaning in a storm has usually lost roots on one side, and it can go over in the next strong wind or rain. If it leans toward the house, a road or a play area, have it looked at soon.

Should I cut the tree off my roof myself?

We advise against it. Trunks under load can spring when cut, roofs can give way, and chainsaw injuries spike after storms. Tarp the inside if you can, stay off the roof, and call.
