Pruning for Coastal Wind

Tree trimming and pruning is often the reason a tree does not need to be removed later. On the Coastal Bend the goal is usually storm resistance: taking out dead and broken branches, shortening limbs that reach too far over the roof, and opening a dense crown just enough that wind is not caught by a solid wall of leaves. Good pruning follows the ANSI A300 standard used across the tree care industry: cuts are made just outside the branch collar, no more is removed than the tree needs, and live oaks are never topped.

Live oaks

Southern live oaks are native along the Texas coast and are built for wind, with a low center of gravity and a widespread root system. Their long, low limbs can still become a problem over a roof or a driveway, and an oak that has never been pruned may carry heavy dead wood inside the crown. Light thinning, deadwood removal, and reducing a single heavy limb are the usual work. Oak wilt, the disease that kills many live oaks in Central Texas, is mapped by the Texas A&M Forest Service mainly in Central, North and West Texas, but its guidance is sound anywhere oaks grow: avoid pruning oaks from February through June when possible, and paint every oak wound right after cutting.

Palm trimming

Palms are trimmed differently from hardwoods. The healthy green fronds feed the palm, so a good trim removes dead and drooping fronds, flower and fruit stalks, and loose boots, and leaves the rest. Cutting a palm down to a few upright fronds, sometimes called a hurricane cut, weakens it. Tall Mexican fan palms hold their dead fronds in a thick skirt that shelters rats, wasps and scorpions and can drop in a storm; removing that skirt from a tall trunk is skilled and risky work.

When to trim

Late winter and early spring, before hurricane season, are the most common times for storm pruning on most species here, with the oak timing above in mind. Dead and broken limbs can come off any time of year.

Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions

How often should a live oak be trimmed?

For a mature, healthy live oak, a light pruning every few years is usually enough, plus dead or broken limbs as they appear. Young trees benefit from structural pruning more often to set up a strong shape.

Should I have my palms trimmed before a hurricane?

Removing dead fronds, seed stalks and heavy fruit clusters is sensible, because they become projectiles. Stripping a palm down to a few green fronds is not; the green fronds help the palm survive.

Can I trim a tree near the power line on my property?

Not near the line itself. Branches near AEP Texas distribution lines should be reported to the utility, and only line-clearance-qualified workers should cut close to energized wires. We can trim the parts of the tree that are well away from the line.

What is the difference between trimming and pruning?

People use the words interchangeably. In the trade, pruning usually means selective cuts for the tree's health and structure, and trimming often means cutting back for clearance or appearance. A good job does both with the same standards.
