Small Lots, Thorny Edges
Odem is a small San Patricio County town of about 2,250 people, platted in 1909 by John James Welder and David Odem, the county sheriff it was named for. The town covers just over a square mile and sits at about 72 feet of elevation among open fields. Tree Removal in Odem tends to fall into two camps: large, old yard trees near houses, and thorny volunteer trees, mostly mesquite and huisache, that take over fence lines and empty lots.
Why brush comes back so fast
Much of the land around Odem and western Nueces and San Patricio counties is heavy clay blackland. USDA soil surveys of these plains list mesquite, huisache, spiny hackberry and lotebush as the woody plants that invade untended ground. They're tough, thorny and quick to resprout from stumps. Cutting them flush to the ground usually buys a year or two. Grinding the stumps, or treating them, keeps a fence line clear much longer.
Wind in open country
Odem shares a storm history with Portland. During Hurricane Celia in 1970, the National Weather Service estimated gusts around 160 mph for the Portland and Odem area. Out here, there's little to slow the wind before it reaches the yard. Big trees with weak forks, decayed limbs or shallow roots are the ones that fail.
What an Odem removal includes
- Checking what's under and near the tree: roofs, fences, power drops, sheds and vehicles
- Taking the tree down by felling or in sections, depending on space
- Chipping limbs and brush, and hauling it or leaving chips for mulch
- Cutting trunk wood into rounds if you'd like to keep it
- Grinding stumps when you want the ground clear
Clay soils and trees
The clays around Odem crack deeply in dry months. USDA's description of Victoria clay, a common soil in Nueces County, notes cracks that stay open 90 or more days a year, mostly July through September. Trees on these soils handle drought differently than trees in sand, and long droughts followed by heavy rain can stress roots. We look at the root zone as part of every estimate.
Big trees near small houses
In town, many Odem homes are modest single-story houses on narrow lots, and a mature hackberry, pecan or live oak can have a crown wider than the house. When one of those trees declines, the risk is mostly to the roof right below it. We usually climb those trees and take them apart from the top down, lowering limbs on ropes so the roof, the fence and the yard are protected. If a tree is healthy but crowding the house, we'll talk about pruning as an option before removal.

- Brushland soils. USDA's Victoria clay series, mapped on the Coastal Bend's blackland plains, lists mesquite, huisache, spiny hackberry and lotebush as woody invaders, with deep cracks that persist 90+ days a year.

Odem Questions
Why does mesquite keep coming back after I cut it?
Mesquite resprouts from buds at and below the base of the trunk. Cutting it flush leaves those buds alive. Grinding the stump below grade removes most of them.
Can you clear an empty lot in town?
Yes. We cut, chip and haul the brush and grind stumps so the lot can be mowed. We'll quote the whole lot in writing.
Do you work on farms around Odem?
We work on homesteads and rural lots around Odem, including trees around houses, barns and fence lines.
How do I know if my old tree is a hazard?
Look for dead branches, cracks, cavities, mushrooms at the base or a new lean. If you see any of those near a house or driveway, have it checked.
Can you keep the mesquite wood for smoking or grilling?
Yes. Tell us what lengths you want, and we'll cut and stack it on site instead of chipping it.
Will you leave my yard rutted?
We try hard not to. On dry, cracked clay or soft ground after rain, we keep heavy equipment on the driveway where we can and carry or winch pieces out instead of driving across the lawn.
