What Happens to the Stump

Stump grinding and removal finishes what a tree removal starts. Grinding uses a machine with a spinning cutting wheel to chew the stump and the top of the main roots into chips, usually several inches below the soil line. Full removal means digging out the stump and root ball, which is more work and leaves a larger hole. For most yards in Corpus Christi, grinding is the practical choice; for mesquite and for spots where you want to plant again right away, deeper work may be worth it.

Mesquite stumps

Mesquite is the stump that fights back. Honey mesquite has deep taproots and buds below ground, so a tree that is only cut at the base tends to coppice, sending up several new trunks from the stump. Grinding deeper and taking out the root crown gives the best chance of stopping regrowth, and any sprouts that do appear are easiest to deal with while small.

Palm and oak stumps

Palm stumps are fibrous rather than woody and grind quickly, but the root ball is a dense mat; HomeGuide lists palm stump removal at about $80 to $250. Live oak stumps are hard, wide and often surrounded by surface roots, so they take more time. Grinding an oak stump can also leave roots running under a driveway or sidewalk, and those can be ground out separately where they cause trouble.

Before grinding

We need to know what is underground. Texas 811 asks that buried utility lines be located before digging, and grinding counts as digging. Sprinkler lines, low-voltage lighting and pet fences are not marked by 811, so we ask you to show us where they run. On sandy lots near the bay and on Padre Island, stump holes settle as the chips break down, so we leave the grindings mounded or haul them and backfill with soil, as you prefer.

Stump Grinding & Removal Questions

How deep does stump grinding go?

Typically several inches to about a foot below the soil surface, enough to lay sod or mulch over the spot. Deeper grinding costs more and is worth it for mesquite or where you plan to plant a new tree.

Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?

You can, but it is better to shift a few feet over. The old roots keep decaying and the soil settles for a while. If it must be the same spot, have the chips removed and the hole filled with soil.

Will the roots die after the stump is ground?

For most trees, yes, the remaining roots slowly rot. Mesquite and some others can resprout from buds below ground, so watch for shoots for a season and cut them while small.

Do I need to call 811 before stump grinding?

Yes. Texas 811 marks buried utility lines for free, and grinding counts as digging. Private lines such as sprinklers and yard lights are not marked, so show us where those run.
